Understanding poker hands order and an opponent’s range can help your game. These are both important skills that will help you realize your goals and make a profit playing poker. If you are clueless regarding poker hand order, you can’t possibly understand which poker hands to play and you’ll almost always go with far too many Texas Hold Em hands. If you don’t know anything regarding how to put someone on a range, you will experience a tough moment when you’re in a complicated hand and you are required to decide whether to call, raise, or fold.

There are some basic but important skills that someone should learn when they first start playing the game. I’m going to list some that some people might say have nothing to do with poker. I can’t dispute that they don’t help directly improve your poker game itself. But these skills could very well be the most important skills of all because a very skilled poker player will still lose his money if he or she doesn’t use them.

Has it ever occurred to you why there are certain players that make so much money playing poker but for some reason never have a bankroll? It’s almost always because these people don’t use bankroll management. There’s a lot to consider when taking into account bankroll management, but the point to hammer home is simple: do not play higher than your bankroll allows. In others words, you are required to always play stakes that are reasonable for the cash that you use for your gambling.

The next thing I discuss maybe isn’t a skill but merely a little discipline. You should NOT play this game while drunk, no exceptions. The number of problems being intoxicated causes are countless, and you simply cannot play winning poker if you aren’t sober. Tying into this, you should probably also avoid playing if you are sleepy. When you’re not rested properly, you’re more prone to lose money where you wouldn’t usually do so and make a bunch of bad decisions that will cost you.

One last important skill that I’m going to write about is tilt control or emotional management. You can be great at making decisions with the cards but if you can’t fight through bad variance, you will never form a huge bankroll. There are too many players online that get angry when they suffer from bad variance and go on to chuck off their bankrolls while trying to get even. Other players just lose focus after they endure a bad beat, making poor plays and chucking off even more of their bankroll along the way. Having control over your tilt is extremely important.
